Summary:The chronicle of Nicki, a young boy who loses his mitten in the snow and the animals who try to make a floor of it. A mole, rabbit, hedgehog, owl, badger, fox, and bear manage to squeeze inside the well-constructed mitten, which safely surrounds them until a meadow mo office causes the bear to sneeze. After the mitten blows enthusiastically and the inhabitants are scattered, the young boy catches the air-born mitten and returns home.

Teaching points/Modifications for Instruction:Social Studies (Cultural Literacy):The story and the portrayings provide students a window into a culture variant from their own. All levels of readers can appreciate things like: the plates over the fireplace, Nicki and Babas clothing, Nickis boots, the thatched jacket with the crossed sticks to hold it in place, the birds nest near the lamp chimney; -etc. The more able readers can do a equation contrast chart of the elements of Ukrainian culture and their own. The average or to a lower place average could do a simple Venn plat depicting it. Nicki calls his grandmother, Baba, the Ukrainian word for grandmother.

The animals swoop, lumber, trot, snuffle, bump and jostle. high functioning readers can use the thesaurus for other words that mean the same thing. Average ones can do a synonym chart where they match the word with its meaning/definition. The below average reader can do a picture and word match where the action is illustrated and they have to link it with the conglomerate words they are given.
