Traveling by The Dark
In “Traveling Through The Dark” by William Stafford the computer address expresses his passion for animals through his encounter with a unawares pregnant doe and thetough decision. He also implies the cruel clash among the animal kingdomand mankind. Man and animals have sh ared this world for millions of days and will continue to do so. Animals provide many things for earthly concern likefood, protection, and even friendship. As the world begins to get more and more populated, humans come into contact with animals and intrudeon their habitats. For the most part the amplification of human civilization is a lose-lose situation for the animals. In the rime he tells of an example of the result of this problem,and his feelings on the matter are quite clear.
He, the dead overprotect, and the unborn toady sit cornerstone his parked car debating on what to do. Stuck in a ticklish decision, thoughts racing through his mind he comes to his conclusion.
His decision is unvoiced for him and begins to feel regret as if he murdered the fawn himself “I could hear the wilderness listen./ I thought hard for us all” (12-13). He considers the lives of others, any moment other car could come down the dark narrow course and cause more death. His final decision is to push the dead doe and its unborn over the edge.
At the beginning of the verse form “It is usually best to roll them into the canyon:” (3) but sort of he decides to “then pushed her over the edge into the river.” (18). Pushing the ashes over the canyon would completely mangle and destroy the mother doe. He pushes the doe into the river allowing the entombed fawn to have a peacefully burial inside its mother.
