In the short story A Good Nights Sleep Brian McCabe, a Scottish writer, discusses some of the issues of the modern society.
George Lockhart is a teacher of talk and general studies. He spends many sleepless nights worrying. Although the in between noises of tire brakes, neighbours and the noises from the pubs below Lockharts apartment the street is not that busy. Lockhart finds it difficult to fall a sleep because of these noises but this may really except be an excuse for the fact that he is an insomatic, restless and concerned about his son or what compositors case to discuss next with his students.

He emphasizes the fact that he is single as if he has to remind himself of this actuality. He is probably just been through the divorce with his ex-wife, because of the effort he has to make to not think about her and wondering whether she is alone or not.
However, Lockhart has never given the homeless a thought and it comes as a shock, when he finds the young homeless lady friend on the doorstep of his flat. He offers her a shelter for the night but she refuses. He doesnt seem to understand why and is shaken when he learns that she suspects him wanting to take advantage of her. He shouldnt be so surprised about finding a homeless girl on his doorstep when he is a teacher of communication and general studies. He should know better.
The homeless girl has lived on the street for some time and has probably expect away from home. She used to stay at a order from which she now is rejected.
